Happy Mother's Day
At twenty four I cried on Mother's Day because I wanted to be a Mom so badly. Now with two boys I cherish the role I have as mother. I love living each day with my children and getting to see life through the eyes of a child. I am grateful for the service that is involved with being a mother because I feel it has taught me more about my Savior than any other experience. I love raising my sweet family and the being a mother.

The Word of Jaden
Jaden was excited to tell us all about the Word of Wisdom on Sunday. This is what he said he learned from primary, "the Word of Wisdom is a rule that you have to eat healthy things like vegetables and meat, but only a little. Obey our parents and you have to try and be careful what you say. You can't drink coffee, beard, and smoking."

Grandma Julie, The Nurse and Artist
Grandma Julie was so sweet for visiting and taking such good care of all of us. She was the best pal for Jaden, made me morning muffins and worked her usual organizational magic. She also watched over Alex and helped us to nurse him back to health. We appreciate her wonderfulness and hope that she knows how much we appreciate her.

Wicked!
Wicked was wonderful! Thanks to everyone for helping out with the boys. Jaden informed me that he wants to move back to T.O, so I am sure that they were spoiled and loved to bits.
We had a wonderful time with Bart and Randi, they treated us to Orchestra seats and we actually got to watch the entire play. We ate at a darling restaurant called Off Vine that is in an old craftsman home right off Sunset and Vine.
We may be old, but we still look cute!

Here's some info on Apraxia for anyone that 's interested.....
DAS is a speech disorder that interferes with a child's ability to correctlypronounce sounds, syllables and words. It is the loss of ability to consistently position the articulators (face, tongue, lips, jaw) for the production of speech sounds and for sequencing those sounds into syllables or words. Generally, there is nothing wrong with the muscles themselves. The child does not have difficulty with non-speech activities performed with the muscles such as coughing, chewing or swallowing. However, the area of the brain that tells the muscles how to move and what to do to make a particular sound or series of sounds is damaged or not fully developed. This makes retrieving the "motor plan" for saying a word difficult.
As a result, even though the child knows what he wants to say, he cannot say it correctly at that particular time. Sometimes he cannot even begin. Either the wrong sound comes out, or many sounds are left out all together. At that particular time, the motor plan is not accessible. These errors are not under the child's voluntary control so he often cannot correct them, even when trying his hardest. Frequently, a child will be able to produce a sound or word at one time and not be able to say is again when he wants to. A parent may hear words when the child is playing alone or when he is angry, but when asked to say the same word, he can't. This can be very frustrating for both the child and the parents.
What Causes DAS?
DAS is a neurologically based speech disorder. It is caused by subtle brain impairment or malfunctioning. No one currently know exactly what this brain impairment is or what causes it. Theories range from supposing the impairment is a very specific small injury or difference in the speech area of the brain to saying that is a very diffuse change that is not possible to isolate.
Although some children with DAS have had specific birth or prenatal injuries or periods without oxygen, most DAS children have nothing in their birth or prenatal histories that would suggest a possible cause of the DAS. It is interesting that there are a great deal of similarities in the histories of children with DAS, however, it has not been shown that any one or any specific combination of factors is responsible for the DAS. At this time, we simply do not know what causes DAS.
What are some of the main characteristics of DAS?
For a young child with DAS, a limited speech sound repertoire is frequently the main characteristic of his speech. This simply means that the child has very few speech sounds that he can use automatically so he frequently uses a simple syllable (such as da) to stand for almost everything.
If the child has gotten to a level where he can use several different consonants and is actually talking, the main characteristic of the DAS is inconsistency. A child with DAS is likely to have inconsistent speech errors and speech capability. For instance, he may be able to say a /p/ sound at the beginning of words as long as the /p/ is followed by an /o/, yet, he may not be able to say it if followed by an /e/. Or, maybe he can only say a /p/ at the beginning of a word if the word also ends in a /p/ as in pop. Another example could be that the child can say a /p/ word just fine by itself, but if there is a /t/ word in front of it, the /p/ becomes a /t/( so two pan is said two tan).
Perhaps he can say short single words well, but as soon as he uses two or three words in a row, he drops all the ending sounds. These inconsistencies can easily lead to confusion on the part of both the child and the parent. The child learns that he cannot trust himself to communicate his ideas well, and the parent may wonder whether the child is just being careless or lazy.
The length of a phrase as an adverse effect on articulation. Generally, the longer the utterance, the worse the speech accuracy. A child may be able to say syllables and short words fairly well but be impossible to understand in phrases or sentences.
Apraxic children are usually better at imitating speech than at saying words spontaneously. If you ask a child to say a words right after you, he is likely to say it more accurately than if he said it without your model.
Anxiety may affect a child's ability to speak well. For all of us, performing is more difficult than talking. Under stress, the ability to retrieve motor plans becomes more challenging. A child may be able to say a word or phrase well in a relaxed setting but, when he is "put on display" and asked to " Tell Grandma...", the plan for saying that word or phrase is not accessible, and the child fails.
Children with DAS may also lose words. Parents frequently report that the child "used to say that, but doesn't anymore". This is another example of the motor plan for a word or phrase being unavailable to the child.
Exactly how often the child should have speech therapy will vary according to the individual needs of each child. Children with CAS who have severely unclear or little speech and are more severely affected will require more therapy than those who have milder apraxia. Typically, experienced SLP’s will suggest that a child with moderate to severe apraxia of speech have 3 – 5 times a week of individual speech therapy. Other considerations may have to do with the extent to which the child will practice at home with their parents or caregivers; how much the child can individually tolerate; how frequently the parents can bring their child to speech therapy, etc.
As a child begins to make progress in their ability to produce speech that is understood by others, the amount and frequency of therapy can be adjusted accordingly. Another consideration will be the extent to which other speech and language issues are present in addition to the apraxia of speech.
Speech therapy for a child in which motor planning and programming (CAS) is felt to be the major contributor to the speech problem will involve a number of “key” principles. This is not to suggest that there is one method that is effective. There are a number of features of speech therapy that appear to be most successful to children with apraxia of speech. These features include:
principles of “motor learning” such as a high degree of practice and repetition, correction and feedback, slowed rate, and a focus on targeted motor placement and productions
Increased sensory input for control of the movement sequences and sensory cueing such as visual, tactile, and kinesthetic cueing; touch cueing; verbal cueing.

focus on speech sequences versus individual sounds
Many experienced speech-language pathologists use multiple methods and approaches rather than a "one approach fits all" notion, taking many of the methods mentioned above and using them based on the individual child's needs. There is no one "program" that is right for every child with apraxia of speech. Commercial products, programs, or kits can be tools for use in therapy by a SLP who understands the nature of apraxia and how to treat it. However, such programs alone are not the solution.
Children with apraxia of speech reportedly do not progress well in their actual speech production with therapy tailored for other articulation problems or with language stimulation approaches. Additionally, in young children the motor/sensory techniques and repetitions of words and target phrases should be woven into play activities that are highly motivational to them. What experienced therapists and families report is that children with apraxia need frequent one-on-one therapy and lots of repetition of sounds, sound sequences, and movement patterns in order to incorporate them and make them automatic.
In addition, many therapists recommend the use of sign language, picture books, and other means to augment speech in the child who is not clearly understood. This approach may be called "total communication." Having the child pair a vocal word attempt with a sign enhances the chance that the listener will be able to "catch" the communication (if the spoken word isn't understood, perhaps the sign will be). Having others understand the communication can offer the child motivation and the feeling of success in using their voice to communicate.
Many children with apraxia of speech, even at young ages, have some awareness of their difficulty. Providing successful communication experiences only encourages the child. It was wonderful to have Christmas in our home...with our two boys lining up impatiently at the top of our stairs on Christmas morning-waiting to see what Santa had delivered....Star wars figures and light sabers prompted J to exclaim, as he had the year before and the year before that, "This is the best Christmas ever."

We miss you!
Our house is cute, the weather is perfect, and the holidays are here, so we should be jolly. The sad part is we miss all of you dearly. The good news is thanks to Super Grandpa the boys sleep in their cute room soundly and we no longer here the pitter patter of Alex feet all night.
We went to our new ward and Alex went to Nursery (there are three) and Jaden made new friends in Primary. The meetings were good, but you could barely hear anything in sacrament because of the overall chaos of kids.
Jared was so cute. I asked him if he liked the house and he said, "I like the house, but what makes me happy is that you love the house."
I was a little scared that we made a mistake after the clorox in the eye, food poisoning, and lock yourself out of the house fiasco we faced with the move, but I after seeing the smile on Jared's face after his short commute I know we did the right thing.
We miss all of you tons and appreciate all you love and support. We are truly blessed to have such a sweet family and if there is anything you need just call. Love you!

we are really slacking on this whole blogger thing. any way I would just like to say hello to everyone and share a little piece of funny information. the chemistry teacher here at la reina recently became very ill( this is not the funny part I am not that cruel) so the principal has been frantically searching for a new teacher, well it was announced yesterday that she found one. The Magic of Camp
I just dropped J off for camp and he was so excited. I love the fact that he was so excited and that he gets to play all day and experience the magic of camp. The sweet smell of sunscreen mixed with the exhaustion of adventure are a combination that will make for a memorable summer. The best part is K is getting paid to orchestrate the fun and J gets to spend time with her. They are even lunch buddies today. I guess I am an adult now too old to be a camper or even a counselor, but being a mom to a cute camper and a SIL to a great counselor isn't too bad. Have a great summer you two! I love you.

It's been awhile!
Well i just looked at the blog for the first time in a while.. and i have to say i'm so excited for matt and heide to be coming home. (I also have to say to heide that i think that your scooter is probably one of the coolest purchases youve ever made!) My glands are healing and I am feeling better, I know some of you were worried from that picture that coleen posted:). As Tracie mentioned Sam left yesterday, as he was leaving i totally started crying just thinking about how quickly life can take a unknown turn...this whole thing has really effected the whole family. tracie, i forgot to tell you that i am reading east of eden. i really like it, but i haven't been able to just sit down and plough through it yet. i should have some time soon, though. i'm done working at the end of this week!
i just wanted to let everyone know that matthew and i will be in CA from july 12-16 for matt's brother's wedding. then we will fly back to CO to finish packing and drive back home. we will be there around july 24th or so. we are sooooo excited!

wow
Sam left today. Diane and Mark got him from the hospital and brought him home. It was so amazing to see him. He was so grateful to be out of the hospital mom said to him sam it is so good to see you, samd said oh it's so good to be here, i like it here. He was just so kind and cute, thanking everybody for everything just telling everyone that they are amazing. It is just crazy how life works and how prayers are answered. Anyways I am so grateful for all of you and for all the people we know. I love you all.

no - the scooter is not a vespa, its a kymco. there are a lot of them around here...i don't know why. i see them all over the place.
anyway, matthew and i can't wait to come home...its coming up soon. i talked to the lady who is doing the security check, and she said that there are just a couple more things and that it shouldn't take much longer. so that's good! hopefully, everything will work out so that we can move out there right before beach week, as planned.

hello?
People what is happening to our blog?!! well i guess as always i have to take charge and get the ball rolling... well as we all know it has been a crazy week here. Sam's family is here and it is so fun to see everyone again, although i wish the circumstances were a little different. this week has truly made me so grateful for our family and such good friends. I feel so blessed to know that I have the constant support and prayers of all of you and if anything was to happen to any of us, i know what an amazing family i have that would stand by my side.
but this blog is getting much too serious and i thought i should relate a few things i have only recently been made aware of... so katie, dad and i went out to lunch yesterday and dad told me that if he had a vote he would definitely vote for katie as the funniest bryan no question. so then we started talking about who the smartest bryan was and of course that is jared... katie then asked well, then dad, who is the second smartest... dad replies well i think heide and adrienne are equally very smart, about the same level they just apply themselves differently. dad then proceeds with kelly is the most musically brilliant. so we have now concluded i am not the funniest bryan, nor am i the smartest nor the second smartest, not even close, nor am i musically inclined so a bit discouraged i asked (stupid i know) well what exactly do i have, and to no one's surprise dad's response was.. the biggest boobs. so there you have it bryans all of my hard work has paid off i have accomplished great things and have become the biggest breasted bryan. thank you all this totally reflects who i am and how i have really tapped into my inner talents and abilities. i feel great oh dad what a peach!! My confidence has hit an all time high I am on top of the world!!! thank you all.
